<strong>prehistoric paintings<\/strong> dating back around <strong>36,000 years<\/strong>, to the Aurignacian period.<\/p>\n<p>There are nearly <strong>1,000 drawings<\/strong> depicting around <strong>14 animal species<\/strong>, including mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses and cave lions.<\/p>\n<p>The archaeological site also contains <strong>multiple bones<\/strong>, of the cave bear in particular, with nearly <strong>200 skulls<\/strong> and 4,000 bones found to date.<\/p>\n<p>The chambers are geologically stunning: some reach heights of up to <strong>17 metres<\/strong> and contain magnificent rock formations (curtains, rimstone pools, columns, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>To protect this fragile treasure, the cave <strong>is closed to the public<\/strong>. <strong>Instead<\/strong>, visitors can see a highly accurate replica built near Vallon-Pont-d&#8217;Arc: the <strong>Chauvet 2 Cave<\/strong>.
